Meet Pat: A Life of Family, Hard Work, and Joy
This month’s Resident Spotlight shines on Pat, a woman known for her warm smile, resilience, and love for family and community. From her childhood in Chicago to raising a family in Hoffman Estates, Pat’s journey is one of strength, laughter, and dedication.
Growing Up in Chicago
Pat was born during the Great Depression as the youngest of four siblings. Her childhood was filled with love and laughter, despite the hardships of the time. One of her fondest memories was of her dog, Blacko, and playing in the alley with neighborhood friends.
Raised by Chinese parents, her father worked as a cook in a restaurant, while her mother was a homemaker. Pat adored Shirley Temple and would set her hair in curlers, hoping to achieve Shirley’s signature curls—though she never quite got the look she wanted!
A Love Story That Began with Bowling
Pat met Martin, the love of her life, on a blind bowling date. They married in 1957 and built a beautiful life together. In their early years, they enjoyed dancing, parties, and dinners within the Chicago Chinatown social community. Once they moved to the suburbs, their social life revolved around poker Fridays for the men, while Pat and the other neighborhood ladies bowled and played Mah Jongg—ironically, a Chinese game she learned from her Jewish neighbors.
Together, they raised two daughters, Crystal and Janice, and later became proud grandparents to four grandchildren: Kyle, Kristin, Nick, and Maddie.
Building a Life in Hoffman Estates
In 1964, Pat and Martin moved into a brand-new house in a new subdivision—an exciting step for their growing family. Pat was known for making their home warm and welcoming, ensuring her daughters prioritized education and extracurricular activities like piano and Girl Scouts.
She was also a talented performer—so much so that she once dressed up and lip-synced to Shirley Temple’s On the Good Ship Lollipop at a PTA talent show!
Pat worked part-time at JC Penney from 1974 to 1994, a job she loved because it gave her the chance to talk to people and build friendships.
An Active and Adventurous Spirit
Pat loved staying active. She practiced yoga, long before it became popular, often watching Lilias, Yoga, and You on PBS. She also enjoyed Jazzercise and continued her love for movement well into her 70s. Impressively, at 81 years old, she could still do the splits!
While family vacations were rare when her children were young, once Pat and Martin retired, they made up for lost time. They traveled to Hawaii, China, and enjoyed cruises, creating unforgettable memories together.
Strength and Resilience
Pat faced her share of hardships, growing up during the Great Depression and losing her father at age 12. Later in life, she cared for her husband, Martin, until his passing in 2010. Despite life’s challenges, she remained strong, resilient, and always found joy in the little moments—especially when she became a grandmother, or "Paw Paw" in Chinese.
A New Chapter at The Heathers
After nearly 60 years in her home, Pat moved to The Heathers in November 2023. The small, family-like atmosphere made it the perfect place for her. Although verbal communication is more challenging for her now, her signature smile remains, lighting up the faces of staff and visitors alike.
One of the best stories about Pat is how she once spent 10 minutes “talking” to her Greek neighbor’s grandmother, despite neither speaking the other’s language. Through gestures and laughter, they connected—a testament to Pat’s warmth and joy for life.
Final Thoughts
Pat is best known for her kind heart, bubbly personality, and infectious smile. She lived a life full of love, dedication, and laughter. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience and joy, proving that the greatest conversations don’t always need words—just a smile and a kind heart.
We are honored to have Pat as a cherished member of The Heathers Community, and we thank her family for sharing her wonderful story.
