Meet Lois Cederlund: A Life of Family, Resilience, and Love

In this month’s Resident Spotlight, we honor the remarkable journey of Lois Cederlund, a woman whose life has been filled with cherished memories, hard work, and an enduring love for her family. With stories shared by her loved ones, we delve into her inspiring story—from her early days in Illinois to her proudest moments as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Growing Up in Avalon Park

Lois was born on a stormy night in September 1935 at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, Illinois. As the younger sister to Bill and later a big sister to Holly, Lois grew up in a lively household in Avalon Park. Raised by her mother, grandmother, and Aunt Evelyn, Lois often felt surrounded by love and guidance.

Her family’s musical roots run deep. Lois’ paternal grandmother played ragtime piano for a nickelodeon, and her maternal grandmother, a young widow, raised two daughters with courage and determination. Lois loved roller skating, ice skating, and dancing. She was an adventurous child who, at the age of 8, once tore her pleated skirt climbing a fence to pet a neighbor’s puppy—a moment she tried to cover up with black tape, though unsuccessfully!

Family, Career, and Love

Lois began her career in the public relations department at Bowman Dairy, where her father worked as a milkman. She met her first husband, Joe, at a bowling alley where they were in separate leagues. Their love blossomed quickly, and they married in 1963. Together, they built a loving family, welcoming two sons, Ed and Ken, and purchasing a home in Riverdale.

In 1970, Joe decided to pursue his dream of opening a restaurant, a venture Lois fully supported. The family business flourished for 26 years, becoming a community staple. Lois was also active in the Elks’ Club, and she and Joe enjoyed traveling extensively, with their favorite trip being to California in 1976.

After Joe’s passing in 1987, Lois showed incredible resilience, running the restaurant and raising her sons. Years later, she met Bernie while working at Target, and they married in Las Vegas in 2002. Bernie and Lois shared seven wonderful years together, traveling and creating new memories before his passing in 2010.

A Life Full of Pride and Joy

Lois found her greatest pride in her family. She often said her greatest accomplishment was raising her two sons and watching them grow into responsible, kind-hearted adults who chose wonderful spouses. Lois is a proud grandmother to four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

For Lois, something she is particularly proud of is living long enough to know, love, and cherish her great-grandchildren. She treasures every moment spent with them and takes immense joy in seeing her family grow.

Strength and Resilience

Despite her many joys, Lois faced hardships with unwavering strength. Losing her husband Joe and, years later, her son Ed in 2019 were some of the most difficult moments of her life. Yet, Lois continued to find happiness in family gatherings, travel, and the memories she created with her loved ones.

Final Thoughts

Lois is remembered for her adventurous spirit, her kindness, and her courage to embrace life’s challenges. Her favorite advice, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” reflects her generous and caring nature.

From Avalon Park to Crystal Lake, Lois’ journey has been filled with love, resilience, and a legacy of cherished family values. We are honored to have Lois as a cherished member of our community and thank her family for sharing her inspiring story.
